For years, one of my “Wish List” trips was to go to either training camp or Chargers Fan Fest. Whether it was because I wasn’t living in the San Diego-Tijuana area, or I was too young to go by myself, that trip was not going to happen. That is until August 2nd.
I got my Charger gear ready, called some friends and we headed off to Qualcomm Stadium for the 2014 Chargers Fan Fest! Despite a 90 minute queue line to cross the border and another 45 minute line to enter the stadium, we were all pretty excited. Once settled into our seats, we started watching the training drills. I have to say, this team is 5-Star quality by miles, in my opinion! Even the rain couldn’t stop them from doing their thing on the field.
Star players like Philip Rivers, Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead, Eric Weddle, Keenan Allen all delivered the goods. We also saw great performances from QBs Kellen Clemens and Brad Sorensen, WRs Eddie Royal and Seyi Ajirotutu, and Malcolm Floyd, who missed last season due to injury, seemed to be better than ever. I mean, I could go on and mention every single player, but everyone really pulled their weight. The defense was on a roll, intercepting the ball twice during the first drills with QB Sorensen slinging the rock. Ouch, for Brad. But props to the Charger defense.
Mike McCoy and his team have really done an amazing job so far in training camp, and it was seen that Saturday. This is a team that is going in the right direction. They have consistency and they have passion for the game. The support of Charger fans also has something to do with it. That day at the Q saw a record-breaking attendance of over 18,000 people at FanFest. Judging by the queue line to enter the stadium in the early hours of the day and the rush hour business at the Official Store when the training drills were over, the Bolt fanatics showed their love and appreciation for the team from beginning to end.
So, after many pictures and selfies, autographs from the Charger Girls (one of my friend’s dreams came true) and a purchase at the Official Store, I have to say for my first time attending FanFest it was a great experience. I’m super pumped for the preseason games to continue, and I know the team will do great!
AND of course I can’t wait to see the continuing support of the team on August 30th for the BoltBlitz MeetUp at Fox Sports Grill in Downtown San Diego at 4:00 pm where I hope to see many of you there (Small plug but it’s worth it). Don’t forget, our special guest for the evening will be Charger tight end Ladarius Green!!
That’s it for now! GO CHARGERS!
